For decades, the Poynter Institute has pursued a mission of supporting quality journalism for an informed and enlightened citizenry. To that end, the U.S.-based school offers training for journalists and media leaders. Students at CELSA can access some of that training online through Poynter’s online News University.
While some of the NewsU courses require payment, there are several self-directed courses available for students to take at no charge. For example, Cleaning Your Copy focuses on basic grammar and journalism style. The Writer’s Workbench discusses 50 tools writers can use to improve their work. Students who are interested in political reporting can learn how to understand an interpret polls. Similarly, students who are interested in reporting on religious issues may want to take the NewsU course on reporting on Islam.
